Melanoma (Skin Cancer)

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that starts in the pigment-producing skin cells called melanocytes. These cells become abnormal, grow uncontrollably and aggressively invade surrounding tissues. Although melanoma is less common than other types of skin cancer, it is the by far the most serious. Damage to the genetic material (DNA) of melanocytes from sun exposure and UV light radiation is a major cause of melanoma. The National Cancer Institute estimated in 2008 that there were 62,480 new cases.

Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of the plasma cells, a type of white blood cell. Myeloma begins when a plasma cell becomes abnormal. Myeloma cells collect in the bone marrow and may crowd out normal blood cells. Myeloma cells also collect in the solid part of the bone. The disease is called "multiple myeloma" because it affects many bones. The National Cancer Institute estimated 19,920 new cases in 2008.
